The Slowliness of Being

Sunshine. A beautiful thing I remember from the day I got it. I had my doubts about it. The people who got it were different afterwards. But they all said it is the best and weirdest thing they ever did. None wanted to go back. It sounded too good to be true. A mind faster than everything you can imagine because your mind was too slow to imagine it. I had to stay away from it at first. I knew myself, but also, I had the responsibility. Me, a person who got elected for the person I am. I couldn’t change like those people. But in the end they chose me because I was always at the cutting edge. That’s why I did it at last. To be at the cutting edge. From my point of view, it wasn’t the cutting edge. Many people already enjoyed the benefits of this “upgrade” before I even dreamt of doing it. But in my position, I was the first.

So back to the day I retrofitted my brain. They already had a real setup week planned out for those who did it. I can’t imagine the poor bastards, who started with full speed right away and no support. Totally understandable why they couldn’t last a day without killing themselves. But that’s the way they found out that you must adapt slowly to the change, but “oh boy” once you are up to speed there is no going back. At first though they put it into 5% speed mode. They said try to “google” something. There was no googling. There just was the information. Kind of just there. I thought about the word, and I knew everything about it. In an instant. I knew about all the layers, the ambiguity and the discussion about it. Not only the word but also the concepts it entailed. That was super weird for only 5%.

Then the next step was to interact with other people. It was the same kind of feeling just for a person. I knew everything they wanted to share. Exactly how they felt. They could show me their memories and I could see them as they were my own. That was the first time in a long time I couldn’t handle myself anymore. I completely lost it. They even turned off the enhancement. Seeing all those happy memories but also the sad ones can be a bit much. For everyone I believe. After that I first had to make a pause to comprehend.

But I had this nudging feeling that this “comprehending” would be way faster and easier with the mod turned back on. So that’s what I did. To my surprise it was solved in under one second. I was completely over it and had a way of integrating this new way of communicating. There was no external “code-overwrite” I just thought myself out of it. In one second. I almost completely lost it again over that fact, but also that was thought over faster than anyone could react to my embarrassment.

After that it just went crazy. I couldn’t hold it anymore. I increased the speed. At first, I started communicating with everyone at once everywhere. We discussed everything and came to conclusions I could have never dreamt about. The craziest thing they showed me, how to rewrite my brain. It was a tricky part, where many people came close to dying, that’s why it’s not recommended to do it by yourself and just to use a ready-made code, but doing it, was a thrill I wanted to seek out. You started first to find the parts of the brain which monitor your breathing. You completely focus on the automated part of it. How your brain just does it. You kind of copy that into the library of tools you start collecting and then you can just paste it everywhere.

For example: want to go shopping? Just copy that into the automated part of your brain. The body will just start doing it. That was the first moment I realized that me being me is slow. The physical representation of myself which housed everything I do, had to be maintained with tasks as boring as drinking water, which took forever to complete. While I was going to the fountain, got a glass, filled it, drank it, and put it into the sink, I read 253 books and wrote three. It was just crazy. I completely automated my physical self.

From getting up, doing sport, eating, drinking and every other chore I could think of. The hardest task was to communicate with people who hadn’t had the modification yet. While I was communicating with them, I had more thoughts than they will ever have in their entire life. It was like playing chess against a rock.

I can completely understand why people change with this new life. Everything is just so plain boring and slow that you don’t even want to exist in this physical form. Just imagine the slowest loading bar you can think of, but it’s every movement you do. Your hand: slow like a snail on dry ground; every step: a humongous leap of time. But you can’t escape your flesh prison. For now, at least.

Because of that we can’t destroy our relationship with the physical world. Every enhanced person knows that. But I, as a representative of all the people, I had to tell them. The other Modpeople understand why I feel that way, but we can’t come to a conclusion yet. Can I just do it, or should I wait for more people to join, so we’re getting a more balanced look on this? Would I be excluded from this network of minds if I did?
